NEST College: Cleaning shifts @ Cooking Club

06 May 2023

A web app for NEST College students to manage their cleaning shifts at the Cooking Club.

The project has been suspended indefinitely due to reorganization of the Cooking Club schedule and management.

The idea

Cooking Club was a student-run and management-funded club at NEST College, where students can cook and eat together. The club is open every day, and students, in groups of five, were rotated to clean the kitchen and dining area every week.

Due to overlapping travel schedules, many students would skip their cleaning shifts, hence the idea of a web app to manage the cleaning schedule and to allow students to swap shifts and plan ahead.

However, starting 2023, the Cooking Club will be managed more closely by the college board in conjunction with a reduced number of student representatives. Due to the fact that the app was closely tied to the old management system, the project has been suspended indefinitely.

Tech stack

Despite the change of plans, the project was a great opportunity to learn about the following technologies:

  • Svelte & SvelteKit
  • MongoDB & Mongoose
  • TypeScript

For an approximate effort of one month, the project was able to achieve the following:

  • Telegram-based log-in & identity management
  • A management dashboard for the Cooking Club ex-student board
    • Mass-generation of shifts
    • Mass-creation of groups
    • Moving students between groups
  • A landing page showing the future shifts as planned by the board
